Anne Jaffrennou, Joris Clerté and Christian Janicot have been making animated films together for many years. In Brief Histories of… they wanted to tell one-minute stories about the things humans have thought ever since they've been human… In short, a series of animations starting with 'From time immemorial, humans…' and tackling (with no taboos) subjects like economics, philosophy, music and technology as well as superheroes and pretty women…
It is a TV project that also has Internet and mobile phone versions. Brief Histories of… Cannes is the first step in this new adventure!
Back in the beginning, right at the beginning, Anne Jaffrennou always loved telling stories. She liked the world of the imagination, humour and silence. She even enjoyed writing special stories for extraterrestrials in CosmicConnexion, a film that was sent out into space by Arte… Nowadays she writes scripts for television and the Web, designs applications for Smartphones and creates large-scale picture projections for exhibitions all over the world. Of course, she loves drawing, animation and writing – but this is a secret – a (family) manga… of everyday life.
Back in the beginning, right at the beginning, Joris Clerté drew, and he drew so fast that when he switched between drawings, it created an illusion of movement. Later on, he discovered that sound, when combined with moving pictures, produced films. He never got over this, for he has been making films for the past 20 years. He has helped to design the graphic format for TV programmes, worked on the arts programme Karambolage, directed animated documentaries, produced video clips, and made music albums. He founded the audio and visual design studio doncvoilà with Virginie Giachino so they could be completely free to make all sorts of different things. He is often to be seen in the evening around Paris in the company of Honoré de Balzac.
Back in the beginning, right at the very beginning, Christian Janicot learnt typography. He liked words. But he also liked poetry and films, and he published an Anthology of Invisible Cinema for the Centenary of… cinema! Last but not least, he loves pictures, special effects and artists… Nowadays he writes, comes up with ideas for books and films, and is artistic director for many different 2D, and even 3D, animation projects! Le Laboratoire d'Images is one rather special project, with Supinfocom school of animation and Canal+, to invent the computer-generated images of tomorrow… with the most prestigious illustrators of today!
